The bowline is probably one of the most common knots used in boating. Below are a few points on how to tie a bowline.
To practise a bowline, all you need is a short length of line.
Step 1: Create a Loop
Place the short end over the long end to form a small loop.
Step 2: Thread the Short End
Pass the short end through the loop, round the back of the standing part, and back in through the loop.
The video will guide you better on how to tie a bowline.
Mooring a Line to a Ring
If you want to tie a mooring line to a mooring ring, the best way to secure it is with a bowline.
Securing a Painter to a D Ring
On a small boat or RHIB, we generally tie a short line (a painter) to the D ring on the bow. The best way to secure this is with a bowline.
Attaching Genoa Sheets
On a sailing vessel, the bowline also has many uses. For example, if we want to secure the Genoa sheets to the Genoa, we would use a bowline.
Recovering a Person from the Water
A bowline can also be used to recover a person from the water by forming a big loop. The person in the water can put the big loop around them and be pulled towards the boat.
From the above examples, we can see that the bowline is one of the most common and versatile knots in boating.
