Training Fleets

Our Training Fleet at Prosailing Malta

At Prosailing Malta, our training fleet consists of four vessels: two sailing yachts, a mid-sized motorboat, and an open boat.

Sailing Yachts

Beneteau Oceanis 411 — Dovecote

The Beneteau Oceanis 411 is a three-cabin, two-head medium-sized cruising yacht, ideal as a training vessel. She is fitted with a 54hp Yanmar engine and standard cruising sails.

We have used this vessel for the past nine years and made several upgrades to improve training delivery. Her sail plan includes an inmast furling main and a furling genoa. The Oceanis 411 is well balanced and achieves reasonable speed, even in light winds.

Given Malta’s wide range of conditions, from calm breezes to winds above 30 knots — we fitted her with an inner forestay. This allows us to set a smaller jib, making her an excellent training boat for demonstrating how to bend on a traditional working jib. It also shifts the centre of effort aft, improving sea-keeping when sailing to windward.

Beneteau Oceanis 393 — Nereide

Our second sailing yacht, the Beneteau Oceanis 393, has accommodation spaces almost identical to the 411. Like the 411, she is powered by a 54hp Yanmar engine, which simplifies maintenance and parts sourcing.

Her sail plan is similar to the 411’s but with one key difference: she is fitted with a conventional mainsail with lazyjacks. This gives students the opportunity to practice traditional reefing techniques, while the 411’s furling mainsail demonstrates ease of sail handling. The combination of both vessels ensures well-rounded training.

Motorboat

Rodman 900 HT

The Rodman 900 HT is a mid-sized motorboat equipped with twin Volvo Penta TAMD41B 200HP diesel engines on direct shafts. Though just under 10 meters long, she handles like a much larger vessel, making her ideal for advanced training.

Students training on the Rodman often prepare for their RYA Yachtmaster Offshore exam, qualifying them to skipper vessels up to 200 gross tons. While not the most luxurious craft, her exceptional sea-keeping characteristics set her apart from other vessels in her class.

Open Boat

Boston Whaler 170 Super Sport

The Boston Whaler 170 Super Sport is the smallest vessel in our fleet and is primarily used for RYA Powerboat Level 2 and TM Nautical Licence courses.

Unlike many schools that use RHIBs, we chose the legendary Boston Whaler for its durability and safety. Built from GRP with foam-core construction, it is unsinkable and resistant to sun damage, an advantage over RHIBs, which can degrade over time.

Over the years, the Boston Whaler has proven itself by delivering reliable training to hundreds of students.
