A few months ago, I delivered a yacht from Yalova, Turkey, to Malta. Upon arrival, I visited Marie Claire at Prosailing Malta to discuss completing my RYA Yachtmaster exams. From that first meeting, the communication, professionalism, and warmth were outstanding. I returned to Malta a few weeks later and spent a week doing theory with Rob then sat the theoretical exam. After that, I completed a week of practical training on their motorboat MammaGu in preparation for the motor exam, and then another week aboard their sailboat Dovecote to prepare for the sailing exam. Every step of the way, Marie Clare and Rob were excellent—knowledgeable, friendly, approachable, and incredibly supportive. The training itself was fantastic, helped by great weather and an even better atmosphere. Rob is an amazing teacher with fantastic communication skills. For the exam week, an RYA examiner flew in from the UK, and thanks to the exceptional preparation provided by Prosailing Malta, I’m proud to say I passed both the motor and sail Yachtmaster exams. I am extremely grateful to Prosailing Malta for their outstanding instruction, warm hospitality, and unwavering support throughout my time in Malta. I wholeheartedly recommend them to anyone pursuing RYA qualifications.Posted on Leonardo Ruggieri29/11/2025Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Grazie, grazie, grazie.Posted on Bob Cherry23/11/2025Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. I attended a Prosailing competent crew course in November 2025. I had never been on a boat before and was 64 years old. I am an outdoorsy type - heavily into camping, skiing, mountaineering, swimming etc. I managed teaching staff in a former life. The booking and management of the course was very slick and professional. The real star of the show was the lead captain Riccardo. Riccardo brought a highly disciplined approach to the delivery and testing of the learning with an inhuman compassion and tolerance for every mistake that was made, whilst leaping onto every development opportunity of the students. Riccardos experience and knowledge of sailing spilled over in informal conversations with the crew held over many hours. I was lowest ranking of the crew - the other three doing the day skipper course all had extensive sailing experience. The experience of Riccardo and the rest of the crew rapidly created a supportive atmosphere where mistakes were learnt from not punished. The prevailing attitude amongst everyone was if thete was a job to be done and you could do it..then do it. The boat was kept was kept in very good order throughout the five days. Highlights of the course was spending time in a small coffin like lift in a supermarket at the night stop in Gozo discussing how to pass the time if the lift broke down. One of the crew members, who had a wealth of local memories, drove us around Gozo at night, taking us on a two-hour journey. We stopped occasionally in unlit and unkown locations on the island where we could see all the stars and Milkyway. These courses are what you make them. With no prior experience I recommend you do following 1) Learn the names of all parts of the boat. 2) Learn all the lines/ropes and sails 3) Learn the points of sail. You will slow down your learning and hold back the crew if you don't know your main sail from your main sheet. Physically the sailing was not that demanding. If you are getting on a bit work on your balance and once you get to the boat try walking around all parts of the deck. Its not difficult but it helps. My biggest issue at competent crew stage was position on the winch (this is about speed and power) it hurts when you position your body poorly. I've camped a lot. I found the berths positively luxurious. The crew members from warmer climes noted the cold at night. It sounds soft but even during summer there is wisdom in having a small hot water bottle to get comfortable before sleeping. Personally I found living on the boat warmer and dryer than camping in Scotland. Sea sickness. I had slight attack for an hour on day two (with gentle seas). Probably because I was looking at the chart plotter too long. If you're concerned about this just avoid breakfast, keep eyes fixed on horizon and avoid going below decks. Come day three you can pretty much deal with any sea conditions. I wouldnt ever visit Malta for a holiday but the experience of doing competant crew with prosail was an exceptional one. I saw a lot a Malta that no Englishman in their right mind would ever see. I was undoubtedly lucky with the crew and captain. I may be wrong but with certain crews the sailing might turn out like a reality tv show with ugly people. However, I am confident that Riccardo could keep any crew together. At whatever age you are you can benefit from this course especially if you have never sailed before, with one caveat: If your idea of roughing it is a hotel without a smart TV and 24 hour access to dry Martini - you will die.... Marie Claire was fantastic keeping me informed about my course and what I needed to bring for the practical course itself. Any and all questions were answered quickly and completely. We sailed on a Beneteau Oceanis 411 which served us very well for four students plus one instructor. Food was provided for breakfast and lunch, as well as for the one night we spent outside of Creek Harbour. Our instructor Riccardo was fantastic. Extremely patient and very giving with his time and expertise. His instruction was excellent but I also really enjoyed that he allowed us the space to learn from mistakes in a safe environment. I highly recommend ProSailingMalta to others looking to learn to sail. Malta itself has also been tremendously warm and welcoming + full of historyPosted on Will Jack21/11/2025Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google.
