The Yachtmaster Coastal/Offshore Prep & Exam course is an advanced RYA-accredited sailing and motor cruising assessment program designed for experienced sailors aiming to achieve one of the most respected qualifications in the maritime industry. The program includes intensive preparation, passage planning, advanced navigation, yacht handling, pilotage, seamanship, and practical examination under the supervision of qualified RYA examiners. Candidates are assessed on their ability to safely skipper a yacht in coastal and offshore conditions by day and night. COASTAL SKIPPER & YACHTMASTER OFFSHORE THEORY: Monday 2nd to Saturday 7th November €750

Our chief instructor Robert is a qualified Yachtmaster examiner for sail himself, so rest assured you are being trained by the very best! We generally fly in an examiner every February and November. Group examinations can be arranged upon request.

Is there a fixed Yachtmaster training course? +

No. Yachtmaster is competency-based. Candidates prepare through experience and preparation weeks before undertaking the official practical exam.

What is covered during the prep week? +

Preparation typically includes:

What certificates are required before the exam? +

Candidates must hold:

Marine Radio Certificate (SRC or higher)

Yes. The Yachtmaster assessment is a practical onboard examination conducted by an RYA examiner.

Course Type

We offer RYA Yachtmaster examinations for both sail and motor. You can choose between doing the exam for Coastal or Offshore Yachtmaster. The requirements for the two exams are different:

Yachtmaster Coastal

  • 800 nautical miles, half of which need to be in tidal waters
  • 12 night hours
  • 2 days as skipper

Yachtmaster Offshore

  • 2500 nautical miles, half of which need to be in tidal waters
  • Offshore passages including overnight trips
  • Multiple passages as skipper

Students must also hold a valid First Aid Certificate and VHF SRC certificate.
