Imagine you’re out on the water and need to reach a harbour for an urgent berth, contact a buddy boat for assistance, or call for help in an emergency. A VHF radio is your lifeline at sea, ensuring you can communicate quickly and effectively when it matters most. Whether you’re sailing, powerboating, or working in the maritime industry, the RYA VHF Short Range Certificate (SRC) Course gives you the confidence and skills to use marine radios properly and legally.
This internationally recognised qualification is essential for any skipper or crew member. From making routine calls to handling distress situations, you’ll learn how to operate a VHF radio with Digital Selective Calling (DSC)—the modern system that allows instant communication with the coastguard and nearby vessels.
At Prosailing Malta, we focus on real-world application. Our expert instructors ensure you get hands-on practice using marine radio equipment and simulators in a relaxed, small-group setting. By the end of the course, you’ll be fully prepared for the SRC exam and ready to communicate with confidence—whether for safety, coordination, or simply staying connected on the water.

They are always easy to deal with, friendly, and efficient. It is a pleasure to now have started to use them for our day skipper and vhf qualifications. It is great that, particularly on the boat, they are such small groups that you get 1-1 care and attention. Rob’s years of practical experience, on a range of vessels, in many different countries inc. UK, Malta, Italy etc., really help him give examples to the Intl students here on the course, as well as the locals. I’ve got my next bookings done already! Had one week's skippered charter with fantastic skipper Riccardo and then one week RYA Coastal Skipper course with the chief instructor Robert, who was equally outstanding in getting across the technical sailing skills and general seamanship knowledge! Sailing around Malta and Gozo was a truly magical experience I won't forget. Thanks to the entire Prosailing Malta team and hope to return to Malta soon! Prosailing is an RYA sailing school in Malta, and the extra plus is that it’s a Maltese family business with Robert Mifsud (Chief Instructor) & Marie Claire Mifsud (Admin) who provide a sailing experience with the personal touch. The boat was a well maintained Beneteau Oceanis 411, clean and well presented. On arrival at the boat it was pleasing to see the that the beds were freshly made, and everything was looking clean & tidy and that provisions were available. I had arrived early and was made to feel welcome by Robert who met me at the pontoon. I slept on the boat throughout the course and with the provisions provided was able to have breakfast on the boat. Each day of the course Robert brought lunch (prepared by his mother) to the boat, and so after a busy morning of sailing we looked forward to an enjoyable & satisfying lunch which fueled us for the afternoon session. Robert has a relaxed and effective way of instructing, and while learning there was a sense of fun combined with a holiday feeling with the magnificent back drop of Valletta. Marie Claire who had been dealing with all communication leading up to the course came to the boat at the start and again at the end of the course, which added to the personal touch experienced throughout the Prosailing experience. I will return to Prosailing and recommend sailing with them. Mats2025-03-17Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. I recently did my VHF course and RYA Day Skipper here. It was a great experience both in the class room and on the water. Robert, Marie Claire and Ricky did an amazing job. Everyone was very professional, I learned a lot and the group also had a lot of fun! Can recommend to anyone. Plus points for vegetarian food being provided on the boat. I recently completed my Yachtmaster Offshore practical course with Prosailing Malta, and I cannot recommend them highly enough. The programme began with an optional day in the classroom, designed to refresh our passage planning skills, followed by an exhilarating five days on the water. During this time, we engaged in boat familiarisation, refined our boat handling and maneuvering techniques, practiced sail setting, honed our seamanship, navigation and pilotage at night. The focus was not merely on teaching us these essential skills but rather on polishing our existing knowledge in preparation for the examination ahead. Our mentor, Rob, was truly exceptional. He skillfully balanced individual attention with group dynamics, ensuring that each of us could perform at our very best. His thoroughness, constructive feedback, and thoughtful guidance helped us enhance our abilities through insightful alternative suggestions. Rob is not only a highly experienced and professional skipper but also possesses outstanding interpersonal skills that make learning enjoyable and effective. Sailing alongside Rob was a genuine pleasure, and I look forward to the opportunity to do so again in the future. I wholeheartedly recommend Rob and the entire team at Prosailing Malta for anyone seeking top-notch sailing instruction.
